What are the Common types of Cables?

The number of cables is very large, and many types of modifications are slightly different. The cable can be either a power cable or other types of cables, such as information cables, which include twisted-pair cables. We have written a detailed article about this cable. First, we will study power cords for laying outdoor or indoor wiring.

VVG

It is considered one of the most common cables. It is used to transmit currents with voltages up to 1000 V at a frequency of 50 Hz. Can use PVC insulation, single-wire and multi-wire conductors. The cross section can vary from 1.5 to 240mm², depending on the modification form, there are many of them, so we only mention the most common ones:

  • VVGp is a flat cable, that is, all core wires are on the same plane. This is the only difference from the main view;
  • AVVG-aluminum single-wire conductor, the maximum cross-sectional area is 50mm²;
  • VVGng is a special cable whose insulation does not support burning.
  • VVGz-The space between the inner and outer insulating layers is filled with PVC threads or rubber crumbs.
  • In any case, all VVG cables have high chemical and mechanical stress resistance, a wide operating temperature range, a good bending radius and a low price.

NYM

NYM cable can be called an analog of VVG, but it is different. It is manufactured according to European standards, higher quality and more reliable materials are used in the manufacturing process, and the tolerances themselves are stricter. It also has an inner layer between the outer insulating layer and the inner insulating layer, which is made of rubber.

It is designed for a voltage of 660 V, can work at temperatures from -40 to +70, and is composed of multiple strands of copper wire, the number of which can vary from 2 to 5. They are used to install any wiring, but there are restrictions: NYM cannot be placed in concrete, nor exposed to direct sunlight (this will damage the external insulation).

VBBShv

The cross-section of the cable can be 1.5 to 240mm², and the copper conductor can be single or multi-wire, and the number is one to five. Both the inner and outer insulating materials are made of PVC and filled with voids. Under the shell, the armor is made of metal straps. The cable can be used at a temperature of -50 to +50 degrees and can withstand a voltage of 1000 V.
